A child’s brain develops most rapidly in the first 5 years of life. This means that brain building doesn’t start when kids walk into the classroom, it happens in every single moment throughout a child’s day from the day they are born. As a parent, you have a wonderful opportunity to take a positive and proactive role in supporting early brain development which primes your child for success in kindergarten.

Want to learn some easy ways to help get your child ready for school? READY! for Kindergarten workshops are coming up in the Amity, Yamhill Carlton, Dayton, McMinnville, Sheridan, Newberg, and Willamina school districts! To find a class near you go to the Ready! website.

At some of these workshops you may see some Vroom tip cards. Vroom is a new initiative that empowers parents and caregivers to play a proactive role in their children’s early brain development. Check out their Daily Vroom app to have easy, free brain building activities sent right to your phone.

Polk County has provided high quality, evidence-based parent education to parents in all areas of the county since July 2011. On July 1, 2016 the Parent Education program will expand into Yamhill County through Yamhill Community Care thanks to an award from the Oregon Parent Education Collaborative (OPEC) Expansion Grant. The $100,000 grant will be used to coordinate parent education, increase the number of trained parent facilitators, and expand parent education to all the communities in both counties. This award is part of a multi-year initiative developed by The Oregon Community Foundation in partnership with the Meyer Memorial Trust, The Ford Family Foundation, The Collins Foundation, and Oregon State University. Polk County Commissioner Jennifer Wheeler states, “We are proud of our staff for the successful service they have provided to Polk County residents over the years through the Parent Education Program. We are excited about the expanded partnership with Yamhill County to provide these same services to our citizens in the two County region.”...

Getting kids ready to start school is about more than learning letters and numbers. It's about learning how to listen, follow directions, and make friends. This year Yamhill Community Care Organization's Early Learning Hub partnered with United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley to create a Kindergarten Readiness Calendar. This calendar contains dozens of activities you can do with your child to not only get them prepared for kindergarten, but to begin building the habits that will keep them healthy and excited about their education.

Look in the back pages for your local library's hours, the phone number for the elementary school your child will attend, and free or low cost museums the whole family can visit during the summer.

The calendar is available in English and Spanish. To download a digital version of the calendar click here.
